Head and facial pain both provide a difficult challenge to the doctor and as well as taxing and frustrating the one afflicted. At least two reasons account for these problems. First, anatomically, the facial region of the body is one of the most highly innervated areas of the body, especially the mouth. Second, the head and face are subjected to repeated injuries and infections, which only serve to make diagnosis of cause of pain quite difficult.

Listed below are several pain syndromes which are generally misdiagnosed and yet, are quite common. If you feel that you may have one of these problems causing your facial or head pain, make an appointment to see Dr. Shankland.

The following various pain disorders are oftentimes the cause of chronic facial and head pain. Many times, two or more of these exist together, especially after a traumatic event. Also, just because you may have a clicking TMJ does not mean that’s the source of your pain. If you feel that you have one or more of these disorders, consider making a consultation appointment with Dr. Shankland and his staff. They see people literally from all over the world and many of these patients have read Dr. Shankland’s scientific papers or this web site and where guided to our office.
